Deepa Panchamia’s philosophy is to challenge conventional perspectives of Textiles. Creating abstract sculptures, site-specific installations and avant-garde wearable art, her interests lie in the intertwining concepts of scale and space, structure and surface. Through a complex technique of pleating, cutting and stitching, Deepa creates sculptural fabrics that can be moulded, manipulated and transformed – essentially moving textiles away from its traditional two-dimensional form.

Working predominately with transparent fabrics and occasionally leather, her focus is to explore and exploit the structural potential of fabrics. As Deepa manipulates and constructs the fabric, the three-dimensional nature gradually becomes apparent, allowing her work to evolve through a series of stages. The use of transparent material creates an interaction between the exterior and interior textural surfaces, adding levels of depth to the structure. Her intention is to create architectural textile formations made solely from fabric – without the use of any other external materials (such as metal and wood) to provide structure.

Her abstract structures combined with their inviting surfaces have an organic life-like quality. Working in harmony, the surface and form exhibit a strong linear wave motion that is detailed yet controlled; energetic yet coherent. Deepa’s work is solely about reaching this balance – to create structures that engage notions of aesthetics, rhythm and continuity.

Working from her London-based studio, Deepa undertakes projects and commissions for interior spaces in the UK and abroad.
