Deepa Panchamia’s philosophy is to challenge the conventional perspectives of textiles. Through a synthesis of material exploration and her own experimental techniques, she creates sculptural fabrics that can be moulded, manipulated and transformed – essentially moving textiles away from its traditional two-dimensional form. Her collection includes abstract sculptures, interior installations and wearable art – a series of architectural formations made solely from fabric.

Combining translucent fabrics and leathers with a complex technique of cutting, pleating and stitching, Deepa’s focus is to explore and exploit the structural potential of fabric. Her work is developed through a controlled yet organic process. As she manipulates fabric, the three-dimensional nature gradually becomes apparent and comes to life. The structures essentially evolve through a series of stages, making the fabric and form equally expressive.

Her interests lie in the intertwining concepts of scale and space, structure and surface, and each element within her textiles is carefully chosen to explore these notions. The use of translucent material allows the internal surface to be revealed, and in allowing the viewer to look through the structure Deepa opens another dimension that conveys a sense of infinity.

Consisting of a complex labyrinthine formation, the interior exhibits an endless organic beauty. One can see how the surfaces morph into each other – the transition and interaction between the outer and inner space, adds levels of depth to the structure, enhancing the three-dimensional form.

The intentional use of neutral translucent and solid colours allows us to visualise how the surrounding light diffuses through and hits the textural surface – producing delicate shadows and intricate tonal details that prove to intensify the linear motion and contours of the work.

Deepa’s initial source of inspiration came from sea shells (the organic formation, irregular repetitive patterns and intricate surface texture) and an attempt to capture, emulate and translate these qualities into fabric. As her research developed, her fascination turned purely to investigate the medium of textiles itself. An obsession with exploring different ways to manipulate and reconstruct the fabric – Deepa continually aspires to push the boundaries of textiles.

Working in harmony, the surface and form exhibit a strong linear wave motion that is detailed yet controlled; energetic yet coherent. Deepa’s work is solely about reaching this balance – to create structures that engage notions of aesthetics, rhythm and continuity.
